LE Reverse appliqué

Pattern taped to the table .Now I will lay out my background and trace it ...

trace the pattern on your background

the four patterns are traced onto the background with a quilter's pencil (it will wash out without any problems)

here are my colour choices for the next part...

I cut a square of my fabric and placed it under the background fabric so that the four segments I would like to have  in this colour are covered.  This way I can sew the 4 elements in one time. Afterwards I cut the excess fabric (and save it for smaller pieces I have to appliqué later on....

Pin the piece in place....

I basted around the four segments...not to close because I need some place to turn the fabric under...
Posted by Picasa

I cut the fabric in the middle (pay attention to the fabric underneath....)
Posted by Picasa

now I had to clip the fabric to turn it under. At the sharp point of the beginning i didn't clip to the end...I will do this when I come back to this point from the other side to avoid that the fabric frays...

to turn the fabric under I use a toothpick (am I doing toothpick-turning?). I have the toothpick allways
between my lips so it is allways a little bit wet, that helps a lot to catch the fabric to turn it under .
But that is MY way to do it, I appliqued the Dutch Treat Quilt with this toothpick method and it worked fine for me, it's not my invention, I got this tip on a group who worked on the DT quilt.
It's up to you to turn it with your needle or to give the toothpick a try! :-)

on the sharp points I sew 2 longer stitches to secure the fabric...

Zig Zag border LE

Until waiting for part 3, I prepared the two remaining zig zag borders...
and this time I took some pics. Perhaps it will be helpful to some of you
to make this beautiful borders.... :-)

I used 14 different fabrics because on one sheet of paper I could draw 7 elements
one up and one down, one dark and one light, so 7 x 2 = 14.
After basting this little rows I will sew them together with silk thread,( the same as I use to applique)  until I have the elements needed for one row on the quilt..

First I draw my zig zag, than made copies and cut them out...
